The New York State JCI Senate family grew on April 23, 2006, when John Tyo, formerly of the
Whitestown Jaycees, was awarded the Richard Vandermark Memorial Senatorship, becoming
Senator #66381.

The Vandermark Memorial is given, annually, by the New York State JCI Senate in memory of
Richard Vandermark, a past Senate President.  It is reserved for a deserving individual who was
overlooked during his, or her, Jaycee career and whom would not otherwise be honored.

The Senatorship was
presented at the OYNY
banquet by President
Bob Cairns #59815 and
NVP-elect Christopher
Nunn #60786.

Tyo was an active
member of the
Whitestown Jaycees and
Region Six from
1987-2000, serving as
chapter president,
district director, region
director and state
program manager.  He

U.S. JCI Senate Winter Board Meeting
January 18-22, 2006 Daytona Beach, Florida
The rooms at the Plaza Resort & Spa in Daytona Beach overlooked the ocean.  Conference attendees
enjoyed temperatures in the 70s and 80s.  This picture was taken on President Bob's balcony.
New York State JCI Senate President Bob Cairns and
Treasurer Darryl Jones traveled to Daytona Beach,
Florida for the Winter Board meeting of the U.S. JCI
Senate.  Approximately 300 Senators from around the
nation gathered for meetings, parties, touring and
entertainment.

New York Senators Ray Franchell and Myron Phillips
were on hand, as well, and two former New Yorkers -
Senators Dave and Melinda Nolan - drove down from
their Jacksonville home for a visit.

At the business meeting, Senators heard reports
from national officers and program managers,
approved Mesa, Arizona as the location for the 2007
Winter Board Meeting and heard announcements
from candidates for national office.

The following candidates announced their intention
to seek the following offices:

  • Calvin Baerveldt, Maryland - President
  • H.T. "Jumper" Davis, Texas - Administrative
    Vice President
  • Pat Hoelker, Colorado - Secretary
  • Vicky Dempsey, Ohio - Treasurer

The election will be held at the National Convention

 Lisa talked about the
Jaycees and her plans for the organization this year.
She stayed through the weekend, taking time to visit
with her fellow Senators.

Senators toured St. Augustine,
visiting the fort, Ponce de Leon's
famed Fountain of Youth (no, it
doesn't work!), and other historic
spots in the oldest
continuously-occupied European
settlement on the North American
continent.

with other family
members.

Myron and Pat
stopped by on
their way home
from a cruise.
The conference concluded with a memorable dinner, which included
entertainment both before and after.

Prior to dinner, Senators enjoyed the comedy of  "T. Bubba," better
known to Jaycees as former National President J. Terryl Bechtol.
Long-known as an inspirational speaker, Bechtol is now a country
comedian, who has appeared over 100 times on The Grand Ole Opry.

You can visit T. Bubba's website,
here.

After dinner, there was a lively music show, featuring an Elvis
impersonator.
"Elvis" and his group performed over an hour's worth of
the king's old hits.  After a break, "Elvis" changed clothes and played
oldies well into the evening.

The Florida JCI Senate put on an outstanding conference, providing a
hospitality room filled with food and drink and a DJ.  They arranged
enjoyable side trips and made everyone feel welcome.  The hotel was
beautiful and the weather, while outside the control of the Senate, was
nearly perfect.  Daytona Beach provided a nice break from the New York
winter.

Lost Senators - Found!
We're pleased to report that several Senators, previously on our "lost" list, have reported their
whereabouts.  Some of them found this website by "Googling" their own names.  We're glad to
be in touch with all of them.

Joe Dye, #33987, reports that he is "alive and well and living in Texas," where he moved after
leaving Orchard Park.  Joe says, "I like the looks of the website and it’s good to see many old
friends are still active.  I also saddened to see the list of friends that have passed away.  My
best regards to anyone that still remembers me."

Richard Mestler, #16864, of Orchard Park was never truly lost.  He is a regular member of the
First Thursday Club, which meets monthly in the Buffalo area.

Ira (Ike) Conner, #23432, was a charter member of the Wellsville Jaycees.  He was chapter
president in 1974, District Director in 1975, Presidential Assistant to New York State Jaycees
President Mike Mendrick in 1976, Regional Director in 1977, State Vice President in 1978 and
was elected as State President in 1979.  Ike and his wife, Judy, spend May-October at their
summer home on Keuka Lake and the winters at their home in Canisteo, NY. They will
celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary on September 11th, 2005.

Joseph D. Schoen #19074,lives in St. Rose, Louisiana with his wife, Rosemary.  Joe tells us
that he was a member of the Auburn Jaycees.  He was a local president , District President and
National Director of Division Six.  He says that he ran, unsuccessfully, for State President in
early 1970's. He started the first prison chapter in  Auburn Correctional Institution.  That
chapter, the Logan Jaycees, survives today.

Sylvain Segal #04137, a former president of the Queens Jaycees, lives in Albuquerque, New
Mexico.  He says that he is still practicing law and enjoying it as much as he always has.

Debi Hubish Shields #47129 lives in Homosassa, Florida with her husband, Jim.  She is
employed by the chamber of commerce there.  Debi is a former Horseheads Jaycee and
Johnson City Jaycee.  She served in several positions with the New York State Jaycees and was
the first woman to serve as State President when she took office in 1991.
2004 Vandermark Senatorship Awarded
It took a while, but last year's Richard Vandermark
Memorial Senatorship was presented on January 15,
2005 at the Year-end convention of the New York
State Jaycees.

Chairman of the Board Roxanne Astry presented the
Senatorship to
Tim Graham, a former Batavia Area
Jaycee and Syracuse Jaycee who served the New York
State Jaycees as a Region Director, Executive Director
and Vice President.

The presentation was marked by humorous stories
about Tim's Jaycee career and by his gracious
acceptance of the honor.

Congratulations, Tim!

NYS Senators Visit Indianapolis
By Roxanne Astry #57298
The Indiana JCI Senate really knows how to put on a great meeting.  The hospitality room was
wonderful and the room was large enough to accommodate everyone with easy access to the
bar.

They hosted the US Jaycees on Friday night with a party.  The only problem was that it did not
last long enough.  The Jaycees arrived late and the party was just getting underway when the
music stopped and the Jaycees went their way and the Senate went back to their hospitality
room.

The New York Jaycees invited the New York Senate to join them for dinner at the hotel
restaurant to celebrate Scott Kingsley being elected National Vice President.  We were very
honored to be asked and it was nice to share this time with them and get to know them better.
They were on a very tight schedule and did not get to relax and enjoy themselves as much as we
did, but I know they were having fun and made every minute count.

Our newest Senator, John Tyo attended the meeting with National Vice President Chris Nunn.
He participated in the First Timers program and got to experience a National Meeting.  I hope he
will be joining the rest of Senators from New York who go to the meetings and develop
friendships as we have.

Our next national meeting will be in Mesa Arizona in January.  We would love to have more
Senators from New York join us in Sunny Arizona.  Wouldn’t it be great to get out of the New
York snow and enjoy sunshine in January?

New York Senators Meet in Oneonta
The New York State JCI Senate met in Oneonta on Friday, Jan. 12. Approximately 20 Senators
from across the state attended.

New York Senators at National Board Meeting
Mesa, Arizona
By Rox Astry #57298
It was great to escape the New York weather and head to Mesa, Arizona where they were
promoting "You never have to shovel sunshine." Not quite true - I think we took our weather with
us. Thursday was low 60s and partial clouds, Friday it rained and was cold and Saturday was
cool and cloudy, but it was fun to get away, anyway.

President Perk Newell and I arrived Wednesday night so we could have 3 days of sight seeing.
Joining us on Thursday were John Tyo, Chris Nunn and Ann Longo. Sandy and Ron Weiler
surprised us with their attendance on Thursday and Friday. They were in Arizona visiting friends
and joined us in the Hospitality Room. It was great to have them with us and share in
camaraderie. Darryl Jones came in Friday from Las Vegas and attended the Saturday morning
meeting with us. Arizona served up western flair hospitality and everyone had a great time.

Thursday morning Perk and I rented a car with friend Louis Allers from Iowa. He was willing to
chauffer us around because neither one of us wanted to drive. Needless to say, he got a dose
of us New York women and I am sure he is still laughing about it. He was a real trooper, taking
us wherever we wanted to go and shopping with us. Not too many men would be willing to take
two women shopping but he did it and we told him, "And you will like it!". His wife and daughters
ended up with some really nice things. We went to a real "Ghost Town" in Goldfield on
Thursday, then drove to Scottsdale and shopped and went out to dinner. We rented the car for
one day, so before we had to return it on Friday, we got up and drove to the mountains before
returning it.

Friday we went back to Scottsdale and went shopping at the Fifth Avenue Shops courtesy of
vans supplied by Arizona Senate. It was cold and rainy and the JCI Senators were the only ones
shopping that day so they were willing to give us some great deals.

Saturday they had buses for the Casino and Rawhide Western Town. We spent the day at the
Rawhide town and rode a camel, train, hay wagon, saw western shows, and of course shopped.
We ran into Darryl and Della, Chris and Ann and John Tyo, but I think they spent most of the
time at the Casino.

All in all, it was a great time and wished more Senators from New York had joined us. The next
national meeting is the annual convention in Annapolis, Maryland, June 24-29.
